The Trendpop Hot 50 List: The 50 Biggest Songs on TikTok in 2022

We already know that music and TikTok go together like Tariq and corn. This past year we saw TikTok hits come from everywhere — from the Billboard Hot 100 to TV shows to TikTok’s favorite DJs. To celebrate, we compiled a list of the 50 biggest songs on TikTok in 2022 and paired it with our insights.

Our Methodology

We used Trendpop to pull the top sounds of the past year by video count growth in 2022. From there, we removed sounds with the majority of videos made by Creators based outside the US. To keep our focus on songs over sounds, we then filtered out non-music audios, and voila, we had our top 50 list.

1. Don’t underestimate instrumental background music

‍TikTok truly lives for those aesthetic background vibes. Seven of the top 50 songs of the year were instrumental tracks. Those aesthetic beats were perfect for everything from day in the life videos to cooking tutorials to travel vlogs.

2. Dance trends are still a big virality driver

‍While TikTok has evolved to become so much more than just a dance app, 14 of the top 50 songs of the year were tied to dances.

3. Remixes are a big deal.

Was 2022 the year of the (sped up version)? Twelve of the top 50 songs of the year were not the original versions of songs but remixes of popular songs – often mash ups, sped up, or pitched versions of the original audios. Some were released by the artists themselves, and others made by TikTok users.

4. It doesn’t always start on TikTok

Though TikTok is usually the place where trends start, three of this year’s biggest TikTok songs came from popular TV shows – “Forever” by Labrinth (Euphoria), “Bloody Mary” by Lady Gaga (Wednesday*), and of course “Running up that Hill (A Deal with God)” by Kate Bush (Stranger Things).

*While Bloody Mary wasn’t actually used in Wednesday, a mash up of a dance scene in the show to “Bloody Mary” propelled the song to popularity on TikTok.

5. Song + effect = virality

Songs that ended up being paired with a game or effect within the app often had greater chances at virality. Seven songs on our top 50 list became paired with a game, effect, or filter.

6. TikTok creates Billboard #1 Hits

No song with under 50M TikTok video views per week made it to number 1 on the billboard hot 100. What’s more, the average billboard #1 hit had 516M views on TikTok and 141K unique UGC videos the week it went to number 1 on the charts.

7. TikTok 🤝 nostalgia.

As we’ve seen in years past, throwback jams can suddenly become TikTok viral hits (remember when “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac went viral)? We also saw previously viral TikTok songs coming back for a second wind via a fresh remix (e.g. “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X and “Roses” by Saint JHN). The popularity of these tracks goes to show you really can’t predict what will go viral on TikTok (though Trendpop can help you find those trending audios while they’re heating up 🥰).
